Family garden, Castleknock

This north-facing garden had become overgrown and tired, and with the children growing up the client was keen to re-invigorate it. As the clients are keen gardeners it was important to include a wide variety of planting, and space for a productive area.

The design centres on a new terrace, located at the far end of the garden to catch the sun. The elegant honed Travertine stone gives a smooth, polished surface, reflecting light into the garden and giving individual character.

The concrete blockwork walls were very dominant and unattractive, but by rendering and installing trellis panels, the boundaries are softened, and the focus is on the planting, paving and lawn.

The planting is blousy, traditional and colourful, against screens of evergreen climbers, and with successional bulb planting to ensure there is novelty and interest through the seasons.
