shady side return, ravenscourt park

A long narrow garden running alongside the extension to a large Victorian terraced house. The garden is North-East facing, so does not benefit from much direct light, and is further shaded by a beautiful mature persimmon tree. Both clients work long hours and would like a space in which they can relax in evenings, and entertain at weekends.

The design splits the garden into three areas, creating a journey through the space. The wider area directly beyond the steps forms a secluded square courtyard, underneath the canopy of the Persimmon tree and surrounded by evening scented plants. The paving is a warm, pale porcelain, brightening the space.

The large porcelain pavers then form a stepped walkway through gravel, with planting either side, and space for a BBQ. The walkway leads to the sunny end of the garden, which has in-built alcove seating and planting behind to create a snug and verdant dining area for warm nights and weekends.
